Why I am so lazy? (a small rant)

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 12, 2014, 12:41 AM
Hello my deerlings. Sorry about this but I got a comment asking why I am sooooo lazy about updating the dear departed. I was going to answer this privately but my message got out of hands and... And I just need to get this off my chest...

Why I am so lazy? Weelll... Maybe because I am an adult who has a daily job as a graphic artists which means that every single work day I spend over 7 hours in front of a computer doing graphics. And when I finally get home and I have done some food, took care of my pets, had some exercise, maybe take a shover and or clean up my house, I have maybe about 4-5 hours for myself. MAYBE, just maybe I am tired after a full day of drawing and I don't feel like spending those few hours doing the same exact thing I do at work. (and making RD comics takes about 7-10 hours).

And oh yes! What about weekends?! I could easily spent all THAT time to draw comics! Well guess what. I am a human being. I have friends. I have a family. Sometimes I have plans with them. And I also have other hobbies. I love video games but I haven't had time to play them as much as I used to. I have many video games left unfinished because I feel bad playing them because I could use the time drawing the comic! I'd also love to start practicing crocheting but I haven't because I sit every single evening in front of my computer, thinking that I MUST DRAW THE COMIC EVEN IF I DON'T FEEL LIKE IT!............ And I never get anywhere....

*sigh* I just... I'm really sorry. I know most of you are really patient with me (and like what ever the heck I post, RD related or not) and you have no idea how much I appreciate that. You are the people I want to make the comic for and the reason why I still draw it. But just... Please understand pokebank is coming. Making DD, has just been really emotionally exhausting. Sometimes I just feel that some people take the RD series more seriously than I do and I am literally afraid to update it because I don't know if it's up to your expectations.

I miss the days when I could draw the stupidest shit and no one took it too seriously and didn't bother to think whether it was canon with the series or not.

Or maybe I am just paranoid and over thinking. I don't know... Anyway, I'm really sorry about this small rant because this doesn't even concern majority of you. I didn't want to start my day like this but... *sigh*  This has been bottling inside me some time...

That's true. Every single person must have activities and hobbies than staying in the computer drawing for Deviantart. Thanks for saying the truth Tamarin.

psshht dat last sentence "bottling inside me some time" xD

... Seriously?

I mean, I kinda get their point for wanting it to come sooner but... Seriously? Artists are not just artists, artists are persons too :iconfacepalmplz:.

Well, at least now they will now have it clear you've got an actual job that requires you to... well, draw stuff (Then again, cant blame him/her: most people at DA are teenagers with little-to-no responsibilities... Not that I have many -.-).

Wow, does the comic really puts that much of a burden on you? Man, what can I say? Price of fame (Fame you didn't ask for but in the end fame after all)?

Hey! It was the stupid stuff that really brought that sparkle! Bring it back and stop worrying about the obsessive fanboys/fangirls that at least are not on your Tumblr :XD:.

Lol it's like you've eaten a giant plate of mashed  potatoes and then you're tired and exhausted and KFC just sends you a plate of whole potatoes xD

Took me a while to understand that analogy :XD:.

 Don't let those people bring you down you should be allowed to have a life outside of making art for deviantart. I love your artwork but I definitely understand that you have other things that you need to do.

Hey at least you're not actually lazy lol to me, as much as I'd love to see pages being uploaded more frequently, I honestly don't care how long I have to wait. Everything takes time, and making a comic while having a busy life is just one of those things. I say do what you want. I honestly never give a crap what people think about my stuff (on here and tumblr). If I want to post something, well, I'm just gonna post it. So just do what you want, when you want. Anyone who truly cares will never rush you. :b

Sounds like that yahoo has his head up his rear. Pay him no mind. You are a fantastic artist and you are doing these comics in your free time. Don't worry and do them at your own pace. Otherwise, they're not enjoyable anymore. Have a fantastic day!

Hey! Don't worry about what everybody says! This is a labor of love for you, and if you need time to take a breather then everyone should understand that you have a life beyond this. I mean, off course I can't wait until the next one comes out, but I want you to be able to enjoy it and not feel obligated to do it. Do what you feel like and don't let other people get you down. Not everybody understands all the work involved in getting things done, so don't let them body you at all! I'll still be here whenever you get it done!
D-Rock92 Featured By Owner Mar 13, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
Wow. I see that kind of attitude a lot on the fan works I follow, and it is rather sad. I hope for the best for you, and do it because you love it, not out of obligation.

You're great at updating, in my opinion. I just enjoy seeing any of your art, and I'd rather you be happy then have more updates. C:

I feel bad about having freaked out on your page over the RD series and Black on White shortly after my return from my mission.  I did eventually begin looking through your previous journals and found many kind of like this one, with life and lack of motivation getting in the way.  I totally know that feeling, while I do excite to see more RD comics, I understand and patiently wait.  I guess other people don't check your journals and anticipated more like I did when I got back.  We are all people, and we live in a fast-food world, where we expect everything and we want it all NOW, while others of us just can't find the motivation/time to constantly output art/comics to meet those demands.

I feel you, just don't take it personally if you can help it.  I think the biggest stressor is when we lose ourselves to the demands of those around us, like a famous Aesop Fable about the Father and son taking a donkey to town to sell it (I won't explain it here, I don't want to spam your journal)  but I do recall a piece of art by another artist that makes me feel better when I get too worked up thinking about pleasing others that I'd like to share…

Man, do whatever makes you most happy with your time, you needn't tend on us. If it makes you happy, do it! Don't worry about what anyone else thinks about it.  : )

We are here for you, Tammy, no matter what happens. There will always be people who think you have all the time in the world, and it is often those peeps who have that amount of time themselves. They don't always (read almost never) understand that LIFE takes time, and art as well.

I don't want to make this comment into a rant, but I fear that is what will happen if I continue along this train of thought.

Just know this: We love you, and you should draw when you WANT to draw, not when someone is forcing you to do it in your free time, hon.

We're patient, you don't have to worry about drawing RD comics all the time! Being forced to work on them is a bad idea, anyway.

Hey Jenna, its alright. I wondered if people were still trolling you to do the comic instead of waiting patiently.. Eff them, we all know you ACTUALLY HAVE A LIFE outside of DA. And as both me and you have gotten older we have more responsibilities on our plate. We don't have as much time as we used to, but don't let that stop you or upset you. U gotta vent every now and then, TRYST ME I get that so perfectly, but don't let some troll annoy you.

You should never bottle your emotions and feelings up .w. Not good for your mental or emotional health. The internet brings out the worst in humanity, and it's not an opinion. It's a fact. People fail to realize that there is another human on the other side of the screen, and think everything they say goes. People can say what they want with no consequence serious enough to make them stop. In other words, some people are gonna be assholes just cause they CAN be assholes.

People need to realize that other people aren't their slaves who need to do everything they want or it's an excuse/being lazy. I stopped my story because it was during a severe emotional wreck that people were harassing me about the next chapter. I eventually just lost all will to finish it, and then lost my will to write.

I'm glad your passion for your own personal art has not been extinguished by these people. You have some cool and awesome art. Don't let the commenters take away the thing you enjoy. If it doesn't meet someone's expectations then it shouldn't matter. This isn't a commission, so the only expectation to live up to is your OWN. Let the stress of pleasing your followers go, and make art what it was to you before you gained so much "support".
Openly-A-PokeNerd Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
It's okay that you have a life. It's probably a good thing! You deserve as much time you need to do the things you would like to. If others can't understand that, that's their problem.

P.S. Your journal palette is adorable!

It's pretty stupid for those people to just think you're supposed to do the comic with every hour of your life I am working on a Proto comic it's not easy I don't work on it as often since there are things I want to do (playing skyrim for example...FUS RO DAH)tell those commenters to try and bust their buns working on a comic page!!
SnowHawk7 Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist Writer
Jenna you are not overthinking this. All the people who say you are lazy are pure idiots as far as I'm concerned. We know that you have a job, we know that you have friends and family that you love to spend time with and video games that you want to play.

So my advice to you is this. Take a break. All of your true fans will understand and won't bother you over it and all the others...well they don't matter so just ignore what they have to say. Spend like a week not drawing anything (Other than work obviously) Play the videogames that you want. Go out with friends. Get back to enjoying life and not focusing all of your free time on the whims of the people here on DA.

I love RD and all of your work but I also consider you to be a friend here on DA and I don't like my friends to go through hardships just so that others can have a few minutes of enjoyment. (PS I get more than a few minutes of enjoyment out of DA, more like a few years)

Sorry if I went on for a bit there but I just think that you should take some time off from DA and get back to enjoying life. But hey, that's just a theory...a nerd theory. Take it or leave it.

I feel a lot of times people who complain and pressure authors/artists to finish are kids who aren't in college/having to work for a living yet and believe everyone has the same amount of free time as them, which is still no excuse and they will be the ones to get a harsh reality check when they do reach that point of their lives. Now when it's adults doing this then they have absolutely no excuse and I worry for the future of the human race.
The point of a hobby is to be a hobby, meant for fun and enjoyment. I know from personal experience there's no quicker way to kill something fun than by turning it into a chore. You're a person and you have a life which will always be more important than the internet. I would much rather have you be happy and work on the comic/art in general at your pace when you feel like it than to constantly be stressed over it. And those self entitled brats who keep pestering you can just put on their big kid undies, sit down, and deal with it. Plus people just need to stop taking everything (whether it be comics, shows, stories ect) so seriously because in the end, it's all just fiction.

This also just may be my spiteful side showing through, but an idea may be to "delay the 'reward' to teach a lesson". Similar to the way a teacher would make the class stay a minute or two after the bell because the five douche bags in the back wouldn't shut up. You could do something along the lines of "the page is finished but due to recent rude behavior I won't be posting it until I feel ready." Yes, the jerks may whine but they'll just make everyone see how awful they really are because the true fans are the ones who will be patient and understand. Again, just tossing an idea out there, feel free to consider it or not. It's all up to you and I won't be offended in the least. :)

You should of hit those guys with a rolled up newspaper... lol Especially for the one who said you were lazy.

Your life and livelyhood comes before comics. If that's something they can't understand its definately not your fault and they can hit the unwatch button and go be impatient elsewhere.
Avi-the-Avenger Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
I agree with you 100%. I think the problem is that a lot of people who watch artists like you and me are children who get their fill of Pokemon/Kirby/etc here when there are no new episodes to watch, and then want more. These kids have no idea what it's like to be busy all the time. They so believe that they have no freedom, but they need to learn to cherish what they have. Society, anymore, doesn't allow adults any time to do anything. You have to work work work just to survive and who wants to come home to more work, even if that work is a hobby. I understand entirely how you feel. I just say, try not to let them get to you. They'll learn in due time what it's like to have limited time to their favorite hobbies.

We're all lazy to our own extents. To be honest, from what I've read here; you have a life. We can't entirely control what you have to/want to do. So, I wouldn't call it laziness by far.

Whoever asked you that probably has much more free time than you do - there are plenty of people on here who are still fairly young and have LOTS of free time to impatiently wait for things. So they have a hard time understanding why you post so infrequently...

That's no excuse to be rude and ask a question like that though.

Draw whatever whenever you like. :)

I didn't know you had pets! What kind of animals do you have? :>

There is some strange rule about turtles where I live, so those are rather uncommon. But they're such cool animals. I also am really leaning towards a bearded dragon when I can get one (I still live with my mom so am not allowed to have one, boo :/ )
TamarinFrog Featured By Owner Mar 14, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
I haven't seen turtles in pet stores in a long time. When I got mine, they were kinda a trend. After that people realized how long they live and what kind of commitment it is. To be honest, if I hadn't been so young and I understood that, I might had not got one. But Junior is lovely. She has been with me over 18 years. And that is still very young. These guys can live to 60 years.

Wow, that's a long time!

It's kind of nice knowing that you have something with you most of your life IMHO. I have also looked into tortoises but they live a really long time too. There have been cases of people dying before their tortoises and their family having to do something with it O.O

It's alright tami, true fans of your work already understand this. That's why I stayed, even past for the art i don't care much for, because no matter what you post, I enjoy it.

But when you keep a comic looking as nice as you keep RD, maintaining the look of the comic takes more time. But, i'm sure we'd rather you take your time and produce your awesome comic, then for you to quickly post a mediocre doodle comic......... I unfortunately can't say the same of myself ^^; my comics usually stay sketches and are rarely ever colored, so they only take about 30 min-1 hour to draw... Enjoy your talent to make amazing comics, no matter how long it takes ^^
aronymous15 Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014
Tamarin im so sorry you have to put up with all of this. People who send you those type of messages are dicks, and I'm sure they would not be able to do any better than you in your situation. You are not lazy, you are just busy with other stuff, and that's fine. You shouldn't feel bad about wanting to have fun and relax instead of doing the comic, since like you said, you're tired when you get back from work, you have things you want to do besides drawing, and I completely understand that. You should just draw when you feel up to it, or just set aside some time when you get home for relaxation and some time for drawing and relax on the weekend, or however you want to do it. Besides, if you force yourself to work the comic won't be half as good as it normally is. Speaking of which, don't be afraid of fans' expectations, you aren't perfect, nobody is, and you should just do your comics how you want to instead of worrying about what we think. Also just because you draw some RD art doesn't mean it has to be canon or serious, it's perfectly fine if you want to do stuff that isn't cannon or serious at all! In fact it's pretty nice seeing that type of art from you. As long as you have fun with it and don't worry about it we, your real fans, will be alright with whatever you do :) so just do what you want to do. Maybe take a break from comics for a while if you need to and get back to it when you feel like it, but don't feel guilty at all about being human!

I wouldn't say that this is lazy at all. :/ You have a lot of stuff you're doing, and not being able to post all the time is a normal thing. I think people just expect you to be a superhuman or something, and that's just not possible.
So don't let these people get to you. Do what you want to with the time you have. Drawing all the time isn't always that much fun…there's other stuff to do in this world. Embrace it~

Not me cause I'm no artist, but I also work 9 hours per day in front of a computer working(programmer), so I understand you and I'm sorry for your inner conflict...
But you should just do what you want, nobody can force you to anything ^^

Nah man, you're not lazy at all and gosh I definitely understand the thought behind this. No worries about the rant sometimes you need to get things of your chest. But see, even though you love your fanbase and that your artwork make a lot of people happy, the joy they bring and such. And man I definitely know the fear (not artbased because hey, I don't really do things like that on a large scale. ) But groupwise and such I know the fear. I know that people judge. But seriously...You're not a machine and you're just human. I have a lot of trouble with the thought of people judging me, the fear. It's crippling but...Hey man, if you love drawing, just do it for yourself. Other people liking it is just a bonus.

Also..Definitely take enough time off to play games. Seriously. I hope you're feeling better man.
