Photoshop Tutorial

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 29, 2013, 4:03 AM
Hey my little deerlings!

Remember that photoshop tutorial I mentioned long time ago I would do?
Well! I finally decided to start doing something about it! Last night, I wrote down a list of things I would like to talk about in it and I would like to tell you what I have planned. Because this will be multiple part tutorial, I won't be doing only one, but 3 or even 4 different tutorials.

Here are what I was planning to talk about in each part.

Part 1 - Getting to know Photoshop! Tips, tools and Tricks.

In this part, I would pretty much introduce you to photoshop and the tools that I use the most. I would teach you some of the most helpful tools and their shortcuts. Some words about layers and how to use them. And maybe something about filters and adjustments.

This is obviously not that important if you are already quite familiar with photoshop but you might learn something new. The main reason though is to make you familiar with some of the tools so I don't have to explain them in later parts.

Part 2 - General drawing tips.

I might put this together with part one... Depends how long it gets. But here I would tell you some tips on how to start and some pose and general drawing advices.

Part 3 - Lineart

Now here the main thing starts! Here, I show how I make my lineart. We would be concentrating on this style, fav.me/d5t19u1 but the same tips I give here can be used in ANY lineart style.

Part 4 - Coloring + Finishing touches.

And the last part! Here I would show how I color my works. And maybe some finishing touches.

------------------------------

Also, I can't promise this but I would LOVE to make video tutorials going along these. It's one thing to write about these but seeing how it's done is also something else! I would love to do real time videos of me sketching, drawing and coloring one simple work so you get the idea how I work. Remember, I can't promise this but I'll do my best to get the video versions too. They would be like those speedpainting videos people do in youtube. Except, without the speed. I want you to be able to see and follow what I do.

I hope you really like this! And now I need to start working on this! Now that I wrote this journal, I really can't back off. ^^;

  • Mood: Artistic
  • Listening to: Pokemon Remixes by GlitchXCity
  • Watching: LPs
  • Playing: Monkey Island
  • Eating: sandwich
  • Drinking: Water

I've had Photoshop for about a year now, It's just so complicated. This will be great, your drawing style & the way your pictures look is definitely the way I'd want mine to be. AND now that you've written this journal, you can't really back off! :juggle:

P.S. :cd: Have you heard this one yet?

Hehe, I've been wanting to do a tutorial again for a long time. Starting is always the hardest part. :XD:

And thanks! This is a great tune. Glitch makes great remixes.

Aw man, this will be fantastic! I've had Photoshop for quite some time now and whenever I open it up, it blows my mind. I'm so used to working with GIMP (lol, my wonderful knockoff program that costs nothing) I'm just not used to the complexity of it all. So in advance, thank you for doing this! It'll certainly help a TON of people!~

Nice to hear that. And haha! Yeah, I have the same thing when I open my Flash or After Effects. I wish I could find some simple starter tutorials for them. :)

I'll try to do my best when making the first tutorial and talk about things I would like to know when starting to learn a new program.

Really? Intimidated by Flash? Looks complicated but it's really a no-brainer once you're familiar with Photoshop, same goes for After Effects (Plus, being able to turn a toy lightsaber battle into a real one or making kamehamehas was enough to keep me motivated enough to learn to use it xD)

A fun idea might be to try using Livestream when you start working on the tutorial videos; you'll be able to record what you're doing, how you're doing it, and answer some questions on the fly in the process.

And the videos, in turn, could be uploaded onto youtube or such. =3

Seriously, you have no idea of how useful the tutorial on simple shading (Included in the page-making process pic) has been, not to mention how the gaussian filter layer has come in handy.
Specially looking forward to that part 2 but you can bet I'm trying all four :la:.

This is so amazing! :O It's a great thing to discuss! Can I ask a question though?

Can you go over how you get the lineart so... perfect?

I can't seem to get my lines straight and every time I ask someone everyone always says "practice makes perfect" but the lines I see almost seem supernaturally straight and smooth. I know click + shift makes "straight" lines, but when making organic shapes(circles, ears, etc) they look... scribbled.

Glad to hear that.

One reason why your lines might be pixeleted is low resolution. When you create a new work file, make sure your resolution is at least 300. (300 is good for colored works. 600 for black and white pencil works)

I will also talk about pen tool that is REALLY helpful if you have problems with creating smooth lines. :)

Personally I think tutorials like these have as little effect as trying to get someone to build a rocket with a hammer. Honestly I've looked at loads of these tutorials on how to do this, and colour that, or how to line this in the end it doesn't mean shit if you don't have experience. As such I would suggest making a simple tutorial on how to use photoshop just to create a simple image, as you can get some people confused.

Also when making a PS tutorial know this not everyone will have the same version as you so if your tutorial includes a function that is only on CS4 for instance then someone with CS3 would most likely not have that feature. Finally list everything you use and possible alternatives. It fustrates people when using a tutorial they find out they would need a tool they don't have at their disposal. Oh and above else if you use a tablet don't do a tutorial including it rather use a mouse.

Final notes make sure you tutorial is clear, grammer correct, has high non pixalated images and easy to read instructions.

If you want to do video's and not just write them out get Fraps and record the process. You, could voice over all but the first one explaining what you are doing. As the first one is an intro you would have to explain while your showing the different tools.

Yay! :dummy: This tutorial will be so helpful, especially the first part. The program I use tends to glitch quite often, and I've been thinking about using Photoshop, and since I've never really used it and have very little experience, this will help me so much! Can't wait to see it.

I use photoshop CS 5 but most of the stuff I teach should be doable in older versions.

As for when it would be out? Well, that I don't know. I'd really like my friend to proofread it first.

Glad to hear that! Yes, I want to show some simple tips how to work with the program. It can be quite intimidating if you are only starting. I also find it annoying when the tutorials expect you to know where everything is.
